3 on Zero Pencil on hot press water color paper 30 x 22
Although tightly observed shards of three broken light bulbs scattered on a metal ring, the whole composition and focus of this drawing is a nod to my love of abstraction. Even the category I am submitting in is abstraction although its a still-life as well.
Two of the bulbs had a white powder in them, when they shatter the white powder scratches off in strange and wonderful patterns. One of the bulbs was clear; it was quite a test to draw the complex transparencies of hundreds of shards with their distortion and complex values. My main challenge was dealing with the extreme low angle of light and shadow. I set this up on the floor of my studio and worked from a combination of photos and the real pieces of glass. It certainly took much longer then expected but what else is new. Now its off to a rare commission
PS: Sorry to update this but I didnt like one of elements on the lower left so I changed that area just a bit. Compositionally it was a some what off in that area, it works better for me now.
This is utterly brilliant, if I didn't know any better I would assume it's a black & white photo. You certainly have mastered the tool that is the pencil, very well done.
Very very lovely; it conveys a deeper emotion, but it seems like that emotion is just beyond grasping. You're an inspiration to aspiring pencil artists everywhere.
You wouldn't happen to be unhappy enough with this drawing that you could just drop in it the mail to me so you wouldn't have to look at it anymore, would you?
No?
I guess I'll just have to spend 20 years and get good enough to do one myself.
