Artist's Comments

I needed a break from “Blues for Mama” although it’s almost done.

“Continuum” 18” x 18” Oil over graphite on Claybord / Oil and pastel over carved linoleum

This is a work that goes back to older series that I am revisiting. There is an icon quality about these works, one of nature, its power to reclaim it’s about mans inability to control nature, at least in the long term. Although it’s not really a “socio-political” comment on what we are doing to our planet, simply a celebration of rust and trees and how both have their own beauty.

The center panel is a graphite drawing that is glazed over with many layers of oil paint. I wanted almost a tile feel to this; I am very influenced by stained glass with these pieces, the segmentations and bright colors pay homage to that medium. The two side panels are blocks of linoleum that I carved and painted to give the illusion of rust, there are a few mixed media elements to this as well. This work is about four inches thick and rests on a silk background. The rusted blocks could have been found objects but I love the process of creating them myself, to give the essence of rust, rocks, metal and tile.

Thanks for looking

I feel lucky to be the first one to see this piece of work. According to my human life drawing teacher you are a master of graphite so I can't say I expected to see this when I clicked the link. Very pleased to say the least. I will be content if I ever possess half the skill you have.

Great! I can see how this can be a socio-political statement, especially since you lined up the rusted metal on both sides of nature, enclosing it. ;)
