FEAR by nimra FEAR by nimra
“FEAR”

Graphite and white Prismacolor pencil

12” x 26”

This is an odd drawing in many ways. Just a test really to work again with white prismacolor pencil and graphite on a toned paper. I was just going to draw my eye but wanted to experiment with some symbolism-that’s where the birds come in, abstracted a bit and stylized so to differ from the real look of the eye. In the end it feels way too illustrative for my liking. I do think that in many ways I am a purest I’m not wild about the white, for me to get the illusion of highlights with the white of the paper and create the hair buy drawing around it makes for a stronger and cleaner image. That said I might do something with it in future drawings, ya never know.

A few years ago I sketched these birds from a section of a painting which I can no longer find; I would like to credit the artist for the composition of the birds

The big question is it a success? Sure I learned from it and its ok but not something I’ll be showing much.

Outstanding artwork! I was wondering how you made some of the great tinting. I should have guessed white prisma color. Do you use a cone tipped paper blending for the darker shades?

While I am not a fan of abstract or impressionism, the birds really sell the title of your work well. Fear. VERY nicely done!

I think that the symbolism is mixed up (birds and fear) the style combining isn't a problem until it crosses with the concept thus the effects take lot of points from the entire quality of the picture. The eye itself could be a nice concept. My critique is only about the idea your technique is exellent - you have a stable hand and a great eye for eyes! :D

Very nice, I love the contrast between the realism and the stylized birds, in a way it is that contrast that really brings it all together for me.

You certainly know how to get the most out of your materials! ;) I know what you mean about negative highlights being preferable, but still on first impressions I think this is your most striking eye drawing. Great job.

I had a bit of a go at drawing hair negatively on my last portrait, very tricky!

obviously I have many "gapes" in my artistic culture... I don't know what is "prismacolor" pencil... but definitely looks great.
I love pencils. You're such an inspiring artist!

Its an interesting contrast between abstract and your usual "purist" approach. But i agree with you that these two images dont seem to match each other. The styling of the birds are very interesting and I like them in their abstract sense but once again i am a BIG believer in strong, clean, and clear images. As always, i am struck by the phenominally realistic work on the eye.

On a lighter note! The mixing of these two images and their title FEAR make me think of the movie "The Birds" ! which makes this picture one of my favs! X3
