GATE X “Reclaimed”

Oil on wood panel /wood construction 26” x 22” x 5”

Although this seem like quite a departure from what I normally do, really its not. This is part of a series of works that deal with gates and trees. This one was done for a charity event and it was auctioned off a few weeks ago.

The leaf image is oil glazes over graphite, the surround (which is not a frame but an central part of the image), was constructed and carved from bass wood, after which it is painted with metallic paint, rusted with acid and then pastels where worked into the surface to give realistic illation of rusted iron This is quite a long process (100 hours) because it’s a true three dimensional piece the photo doesn’t really do it justice, apart from the fisheye distortion you don’t get a real feeling of it being 3d, but work reasonably well, at least well enough to get the idea.

Thanks to all for looking

Very cool! I love the idea, so fun and unique. I've been working a lot with man vs nature and it always seems to come out kinda overdone, but this is very fresh :) I like :)

You did a wonderful job with the carving. I like the overall industrial feel of the surround and the contrast with the organic nature of the leaves. I'd love to see this in person :)

It might be a departure of what you usually do but it looks wonderful. I like the mixture of iron and the fragility of leaves put together it makes for a nice combination.:D

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
