Sticks and Stones

30 x 19 pencil on hot press water color paper.

A simple concept; instead of the usual flowers with their sensual soft shapes, what we undeniably think of as beautiful, I placed some sticks and stones scraped from underneath my deck and filled a beer glass (I drank the beer first). In front I placed two more beer glasses, half filled with water and stuck in just a couple of sticks. The beauty is in the distortions, refractions, and transparencies. With each new layer of glass the sticks changes in detail, sharpness and direction. What first intrigued me was that the refraction of the second largest glass where the water completely hides the sticks and stones in the back glass. Sometimes I draw for just the love of it; this was one of those times.

What can I say that hasn't been said here tens of thousands of times? I have been watching your work on a regular basis over the past seven years and I don't think that I have ever "fave'd" an artwork of yours before. I simply have to admit that I could never pick one work above the other. Frankly, I would have about your whole gallery in my favourites and that just doesn't feel right to me.

You have always been an inspiration for me, Mr. Armin, not only for the precision and care of your pencil strokes. But also for you as a person (as far as I can judge by your written words) and for the subjects that you choose to draw. I do believe that you are one of the best artists alive and while I do believe that the amount of 'views' and 'favourites' do not matter when it comes to art - I do think that you are highly under-appreciated when it comes to deviantArt terms.

So after seven years, I have finally made the move to pick one drawing of yours to 'fave', along with this comment and a official watch, instead of being silent. Your description of the drawing basically tells you why this is my absolute favourite and why I admire your art. Thank you so much for all the pleasure that you have given me (so far), I am really grateful.

Iessika, I thank you for the kind words, as and artist indeed as a human its gratifying to make a positive difference in someones life even if its a small as a drawing. When i joined DA about ten years ago my idea was to make realistic drawing alright to do, on one end you had anime on the other much more conceptional thinking and either is fine. Today you see many draughtmen (drawers) that are very good and I'm happy to still find DA a great place to be, and a great note like this confirms that 100%.

ummm... Question!
how long does it take for u to complete one of ur drawings? or
how long do u spend working on one?

it depends on the drawing the one im doing now will take 1000 hours most take between 400 and 600 some as little as 40 but ive seen people do great things in under an hour so time is not really relevant

this is too stunning,
im sure if someone wants to be as great as you
at making a drawing so realistic, they have to have a lot of patience
and concentration...it's really too fantastic.

...man, armin....i'm been reading some of the mail that you get from fools, and i can only say that you are much more patient than i......being very new to DA, i'm wondering when will it be my turn to be called fake and liar, for doing hour upon hour, day after day, the work that sustains me....so far i have 'MET' some very nice, talented people......you are one of my favorites, and i know you are the THE PENCIL KING......don't take to heart rantings from poor souls with very low self esteem.......cheers to you, armin mersmann

Well Ron I just take all opinions with a grain of salt good and bad. Only I know what I’m capable of and only I know if I hit the mark or miss it.

I am so happy to see an artist here with a true voice a true artistic language your doing some fantastic work, keep on my friend!
