iPhoneography, Face the Wind by nimra iPhoneography, Face the Wind by nimra
For the last year I have been experimenting with photography, not just any photography but with an iPhone (iPhoneography). I have not shown this on my DA site for a few reasons, one it’s very experimental and not really part of my artistic endeavors. Two, I don’t want anyone to think that this experiment will take away form what I want to do and that’s to draw better and continue to grow conceptually. Three, its nice do distance myself under a guise and not get the, “I like your drawing much better” comments or worse “I like these photos better than your drawings”. That would have disturbed the flow of this year long experiment.

My vision was to take a photo every day for a year with the iPhone some are heavily manipulated on my iPad with apps other’s not at all. Some came out great while others where a total disaster but all where a learning experience. Most are about composition in everyday things I saw, and how to affect the mood. It was the best year I have had in a long time as an artist as far as "experimentation" goes.

Most of these photos hold to my “artistic language” some have been transformed into encaustic (bees wax) and will be shown with my drawing, but framing a photo and calling it my art will probably never happen. I have to be more physically involved and reinvent them, I might draw some but even that is a long shot. IPhoneography is still more about the nucleus of an idea then a completed and executed art form at least at this stage. I do NOT want it to take away from my time at the drawing board.

Matter of fact I’m going to keep on doing this for a 1000 days but this is the only time I will feature one of these as Nimra, I still want to keep them a separate identity. If you are interested in seeing these works, please take a few minutes and check them out comment if you like and I hope they are of some interest. My alias is Gerald-Bostock and here is the link.

As always thanks for looking, I have started a new drawing I might place it as a wip I haven’t done that in a while.

Well, I heard that tornado warning near your place... so I freaked and thought to take a hike in the windmill. I figured...the tornado could blow the windmill like a helicopter, then I could fly instead of walking that endless stairs to Petrus.

And how have you been? Except smashing a lightbulb again...if you keep that up you might run out of good ideas :D.

Don't worry, you don't bore me with it :D, on the contrary, though I have to find some proper time to view your new work. But I'm 2500 devs behind, so I might be a little slow. I'm not much on DA lately, except the few minutes I respond.

Great to hear you have so much projects and I'm of course curious to see them. There is a lot happening both good and bad. My family is all fine, with Mike more or less... I don't know. I'd like to tell you the whole part, but to tell you the truth I don't want to bother you either with a long story on which you don't really have a message for. I'm a little scared of repeatability ;).

Well you've made me smile you say you miss the conversations. I do too to be honest.

Being a visual being means, that you notice things around you, compositions, stories and colours.
One media would ever suffice. Your still a visual being when your paper pencils are at home, or taking a break.

I applaud you for using your gift where ever you can, and for sharing :-)

There are so many artists who fear to leave their comfort zone, especially when they are producing such high quality work as you do. I applaud your experiment, and will follow it closely. Best of luck, and enjoy! I'm sure it will only add to the excellence of your traditional work.

thank you, it feel rather liberating but not like a substitute for drawing. I think this will enhance the drawing experience it already has. anything that let me see the world thought a more artistic eye can only help

I like the overall feeling here. One tree bent like this is enough to make me feel uncomfortable so you can imagine how hard it is here :D. The whole picture carries a lot of sadness, at least this is just me and how I see it.

Look, I haven't been following your work for a long time, one or two years maybe, I don't remember. However for what I have seen so far, I'd say it has never been "just a drawing" or "just a picture" or "just a painting". It's always been more than just that hence neither of these can really compare. It's true that with your pencil drawings I haven't [yet] been able to go past the deep admiration and respect for the performance (as well as how much of your time and energy you invest into achieving those wonders) to finally perceive your message. Maybe I'm searching too far, I don't know. In the end I'm happy I can keep my mouth shut whenever I don't feel anything or have a different opinion — after all *I* am responsible for what *I* perceive, the artist not. In this case it's as if I were more receptive.

This said I find it quite interesting how you explore life and combine its various aspects in your art. Just like with this work. Maybe life itself is art after all and you're showing it to us through one of its many lenses.

thank you for your words! the iPhoneography is easier to take risks on, and if you blow ten in a row, no big deal. The drawings are much more thought out, conceived and of course in this style process is all consuming and engaging. I am extremely happy that I found both now one feeds the other.

I'm in love with iPhoneography in general (going by the mantra of "the best camera for any given moment is the camera you have with you") - it fascinates me to have a little photo lab in my pocket wherever I go, something I wouldn't have dreamed of 20 years ago.

It's nice to have something different going.
I have my car photographs that i play with.
I am not ever going to be a car photographer, or any other kind of photographer for that matter.
I have always seen myself as a car artist. And i really do love communicating nostalgia through my car art.
But i have this deep desire that i have been fighting for a long time to communicate other things.
So i am going to leave car art, at least for a while, to go into surrealism.
I turn sixty next month and i am feeling a sense of urgency now.
But i will still play with my car photographs!
I love the way the trees bend in this shot. :)

I understand that sense of urgency turning 58 a few days ago, and i don't want my work to be all over the place, so this is a way to get that feel of experimentation without going all out into other isms or mediums that take time away from drawing.

What a wonderful way to add to how you see the world! And an inspirational sense of curiosity! Another facet of your love of art and how to see what is already in front of you.

Thanks so much for sharing this other artistic self. It takes great courage to allow yourself to make the connection between these two worlds. I hope that you get the respect of your request to not make comparisons or to try an analyze how one influences the other.

I look forward to investigating your "other self" and learning more about how to see for my own work.

thank you Theresa but at this stage if people want to compere I’m ok with that now, it was in the early stage when i was on shaky ground that it would of influenced me, now i can take slams or praise or even indifference.

Reinhard, There is still a diffidence between a fast snap of a camera and the full out emersion of drawing. I can’t compare it at all really. This has the excitement of the instant gratification that only last a very short time. The Simplicity of Silence hunts me still and I have become part of that work in a very intimate manner, this “photo” although I like it is just a moment in time, soon forgotten, I never become “part” of these photos. That’s not a bad thing it is what it is, I momentary rush
